There are more eagles here than you can shake a belfrey at. No, really. Imagine pigeons in Vancouver – that’s eagles in Haida Gwaii.
We are in Tlell, on Hecate Strait about 2/3 of the way south from Masset to Skidegate. Across the straight from us is the mainland, but it’s over 100kms away which makes this place feel even more remote. Where we are now feels a bit less wild than the north end of the island. It’s quite rural, feeling not too different than Salt Spring Island. We were down in Skidegate and Queen Charlotte City at the south end of Graham Island this morning. The view across to Lyell Island and the many smaller islands was magical. We’ll spend two nights in QCC after tonight, and we have our fingers crossed that we can get on a one-day tour into Gwaii Hanaas Park to explore those islands and the ancient Haida village of Skedans. After QCC we’ll spend three nights in a rustic off-grid cabin on the beach on the north coast.
It really feels like the end of the world here (with really tasty baked goods). I can only imagine what it’s like mid-winter.
